I have a question for you lovelies:

are those "The Collector's Edition" DVDs of The Carol Burnett Show any good? my lovely husstastic friend brightredday has decided she wants to be Carol Burnett [and Helen Mirren] when she grows up but she's never seen the show. I said "Bump Up the Lights" was decent, but I know nothing about the other DVDs on Amazon. since you are the Authorities on All Things Carol Burnett, what do you think is the best option for showing her the show?

Haha! I love it when people post to this community! It reaffirms my worth as a human being.

I have a few of the DVDs, and at this point I don't know of any other way to get to know the show, since (on the national listings, anyway) it's not syndicated at this point. I mean, she could get VHSes, but the DVDs are exactly the same except that they are DVDs and therefore better. The DVDs don't have much except the episodes themselves; there's a commentary section at the beginning of each DVD that consists of Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway discussing whatever episodes you're about to watch. This is a pointless feature for people who haven't seen the show, as they're all "Oh, and don't you just love this episode? When _____ wears that _____ it's just hilarious!" and you're like "ummm... but I don't... have any idea what you're reminiscing about?" So I would advise skipping those sections, since even when you've seen the episodes they're pretty boring. I would not advise becoming a member of the Carol Burnett Fan Club, through which you get a new DVD every six weeks. λ signed me up for that for Christmas and even though she got the first DVD several weeks before Christmas, we haven't gotten any since.

So, yeah, if she's interested in Carol the DVDs are the best way to get to know the show. Tell her to get the Dinah Shore/Jackson 5 DVD first, it has the Went with the Wind sketch on it. (Which is only funny if you know Gone with the Wind, of course, but it's freaking hilarious if you do. Vicki Lawrence as Prissy is the unsung star of that sketch, next to Carol and Carol's curtains.)

Correction: As I explained to Kylie tonight, we haven't had any problems with the fan club. Rather, after my wallet was stolen in January, my credit card number changed and I forgot to tell them about it. So they didn't send us DVDs because they were trying to charge the old card.

Anyway, I highly recommend the Went with the Wind sketch as well. It was my favorite of the ones I've seen.
